Please Note:  For the sake of simplicity, these illustrations show complete transection of the urethra. In reality, we rarely transect the whole urethra. We almost always cut out the scar tissue from the inside of the urethra through a window we cut into the urethra. We still sew two healthy ends back together. This "non-transecting" approach helps preserve blood supply to the urethra and penis.
